Friendship and Community

This inquiry suggests ways to explore the theme Friendship and Community. The twelve resources presented below introduce students to a range of stories from the First World War:

A sense of adventure, Hurrah for the King, The Kiwi takes flight, The ANZACs, Good sport, New Zealand Samoans, “To Germany”, Çanakkale Savaşı (Battle of Çanakkale/Gallipoli), Massey’s tourists, Te Kirihaehae Te Puea Hērangi, Pacific Soldiers and Family Ties.

By exploring these stories, students gain insight into perspectives and experiences of people whose lives were impacted by the war.

Asking questions will help students share their initial responses, encouraging them to make connections to their prior knowledge and experience. As they make these connections, areas of personal interest will begin to emerge.
